Bc Smoking Ban Update
Tougher laws and regulations came into effect on March 31, 2008.
The new tobacco regulations ban:
- Smoking in all indoor public spaces and work places, with exemptions made for the ceremonial
use of tobacco by Aboriginal peoples.
- Smoking with 3 meter or public and workplace doorways, open windows or air-intakes.
- Tobacco sales in public buildings, including hospitals and health facilities, universities and colleges, athletic and recreational facilities and provincial government buildings.
- Display of tobacco products in all places where tobacco is sold that are accessible to youth under 19 years of age.
- Tobacco ads that hang from ceiling, counter-top tobacco ad displays, self-serve tobacco displays and outdoor tobacco signs.
These new laws are in addition to the regulations that came into effect last summer, which banned smoking in taxis, bus shelters and on restaurant patios.
The BC Government is also looking at banning smoking in all private vehicles that have a child 16 years of age or younger in it.
There has been a lot of support for this new law and I imagine it won’t be long before this one also comes into affect!
I would love to hear what you think of the new regulations…
and in particular how you feel about the ban on smoking in private vehicles that have a child of 16 years or younger in it.

“Display of tobacco products in all places where tobacco is sold that are accessible to youth under 19 years of age.”
Isn’t that basically every convenience store in existence?
Hi there, thank you for your comment, and yes you are correct. All convenience stores must have all cigarette and smoking related items out of sight.
Interesting. Don’t know if that would ever fly in Toronto, although I do know it has been debated before. I think they’re also considering the thing about banning smoking in certain private vehicles, although for the life of me I can’t remember the details of that in Toronto.
Funny you say that, we were just discussing that, my family and I, as I am from Ontario originally, they said there had been discussion about it, but could not remember what it was for sure.
I wonder if we were treated as adults, if we would make the right decisions, sometimes I think the laws go a little overboard. I think in this case it is a good thing, I know I do not have to be told this is a bad situation, I know it is wrong to smoke in an enclosed place with someone in there who is a child, non smoker etc. But thanks to Big brother they are making sure I follow the moral road.
Sometimes I wonder…..
Eh, you’re not the only one. I imagine many people wonder about things like that from time to time, certainly I do.
I have to admit, I was in Thailand from Sept – March, and the countries surrounding there. Now I have been there before, so it was not my first visit.
There are so few rules, and the adults and children alike are so respectful of others, themselves, and society… the supposed developing countries.
I think we are so wrong in so many areas….
That is certainly a level of philosophical discussion that I can’t match at 6am in the morning the day after an all-nighter lol. I’ve got to take off for a couple of days, but if you’re still in the mood to have this discussion on Friday, we can certainly continue it then
Well, I know where you are at…been there many times lol. I am up for it…but I am in the water most of the day…so I will do my best to be here!!
I hope the day goes well for you.
I work for a bank at a mall in Victoria. A client came in and seriously had the nerve/arrogance to complain to our desk staff that the mall landlords don’t allow smoking anywhere on the property. If you come on to private property and break the rules laid out, regardless if BC Law doesn’t prohibit you from smoking in your own private spaces, it definitely states that land owners can identify trespassers and remove them if necessary.
Hey there,
Thank you for the comment, and I full understand where you are coming from. Sadly the most difficult job is customer service, especially with an issue you like that, where it is not your or the banks rules but the landlords (malls) rules.
