Sarah Mclachlan to Headline Olympic Countdown Concert

Canadian songstress/songwriter Sarah Mclachlan will be headlining the one-year countdown concert on February 12, as part of the 2009 Cultural Olympiad which celebrates the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Also appearing at the Queen Elizabeth Theater on February 12 will be Halifax singer/song writer Joel Plaskett with his alt-rock sound and the Alberta Ballet toasts two Canadian icons, Joni Mitchell and Jean Grand-Maitre, with its performance of IF, which blends Mitchell’s music and Grand-Maitre choreography.
Tickets are on sale now and are priced from $59 to $69.

Celebrating the beginning of the two year countdown to the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Winter Olympics, this series of events highlights talent not only from around BC, but also from around the world.
Various venues with be hosting hundreds of performances of contemporary, classical and Aboriginal music,, literary arts, theater, dance and film. The impressive line-up of events will begin February 1 and run through to March 21, 2008.
The Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad Gala Concert takes place on February 12, and includes performances by Feist, Suzie McNeil, Ron Sexsmith, Leela Gilday, Jorane and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Today in Halifax, at Pier 21 the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) announced a number of exciting events related to the Torch Lighting Relay. The Whistler venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics has been completed on-time and on-budget!
Whistler Creekside, Whistler Olympic Park and The Whistler Sliding Center are a success thanks to the hard work of the construction crews.
The Vancouver Organizing Committee will open the doors to Whistler Olympic Park on Saturday December 15, 2007, providing access for both high-performance athlete training and recreational use.
Saturday’s activities will see more then 100 cross-country ski competitors take to the trails in Coast Cup #1, Whistler Olympic Park’s first officially registered competition.

BC’s 2010 Olympic Mascots

The mascots for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games were introduced in Vancouver on November 27, 2007. Inspired by British Columbia’s aboriginal legends , and traditional First Nations creatures, the mascots include:

Miga – A mythical sea bear, part orca and part kermode bear
Quatchi – A sasquatch.
Sumi- An animal guardian spirit with the wings of the thunderbird and legs of a black bear.
Mukmuk – Not an official mascot, buts acts as a sidekick. He is a Vancouver Island marmot.
