Sarah Mclachlan to Headline Olympic Countdown Concert

Canadian songstress/songwriter Sarah Mclachlan will be headlining the one-year countdown concert on February 12, as part of the 2009 Cultural Olympiad which celebrates the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Also appearing at the Queen Elizabeth Theater on February 12 will be Halifax singer/song writer Joel Plaskett with his alt-rock sound and the Alberta Ballet toasts two Canadian icons, Joni Mitchell and Jean Grand-Maitre, with its performance of IF, which blends Mitchell’s music and Grand-Maitre choreography.

Tickets are on sale now and are priced from $59 to $69.

Cultural Olympiad 2008

Celebrating the beginning of the two year countdown to the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Winter Olympics, this series of events highlights talent not only from around BC, but also from around the world.
Various venues with be hosting hundreds of performances of contemporary, classical and Aboriginal music,, literary arts, theater, dance and film. The impressive line-up of events will begin February 1 and run through to March 21, 2008.

The Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad Gala Concert takes place on February 12, and includes performances by Feist, Suzie McNeil, Ron Sexsmith, Leela Gilday, Jorane and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

2010 Olympic Torch Relay

Today in Halifax, at Pier 21 the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) announced a number of exciting events related to the Torch Lighting Relay. Coca – Cola and RBC have joined VANOC in presenting the Relay. The Torch Relay emblem, ” A Path of Northern Lights” was unveiled by the partners.

The Torch Relay is designed to extend the live Olympic spirit to the communities across Canada and to encourage Canadians to make a lifelong commitment to the Olympic values. Still to be unveiled is the specific details regarding the relay route, torchbearer application process, torch and uniform designs will be announced in November 2008. I can hardly wait!!

Whistler Celebration 2010

Whistler will host a showcase of performing arts, literary events, film screenings, snow sculpting, art exhibitions and outdoor stage and street performances in support of the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Winter Olympics.

The party will being February 1st and run straight through to the end of the month.

Whistler venues for 2010 Olympics now open

The Whistler venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics has been completed on-time and on-budget!
Whistler Creekside, Whistler Olympic Park and The Whistler Sliding Center are a success thanks to the hard work of the construction crews.

The Vancouver Organizing Committee will open the doors to Whistler Olympic Park on Saturday December 15, 2007, providing access for both high-performance athlete training and recreational use.
Saturday’s activities will see more then 100 cross-country ski competitors take to the trails in Coast Cup #1, Whistler Olympic Park’s first officially registered competition.

Organized by the Hollyburn Jackrabbit Ski Club, the race is open to all participants of all experience levels, as well as new skiers as young as age 6. Racers will be joined by members of the Canadian ParaNordic Cross-Country Ski Team and an enthusiastic skiing public that has been eagerly waiting to enjoy the world class facility.

BC’s 2010 Olympic Mascots

The mascots for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games were introduced in Vancouver on November 27, 2007. Inspired by British Columbia’s aboriginal legends , and traditional First Nations creatures, the mascots include:

Miga – A mythical sea bear, part orca and part kermode bear
Quatchi – A sasquatch.
Sumi- An animal guardian spirit with the wings of the thunderbird and legs of a black bear.
Mukmuk – Not an official mascot, buts acts as a sidekick. He is a Vancouver Island marmot.

Miga and Quatchi are the mascots for the Olympic Games, while Sumi is the mascot for the Paralympic Games.

The new mascots were designed by Meomi Design based in Vancouver. The company, headed by Vicki Wong in Vancouver and Michael Murphy in Los Angeles, has created art for Google, Electronic Arts, Time Out Magazine and Girls, Inc.

The Vancouver XXI Olympic Winter Games

On July 2nd, 2003 Vancouver was chosen as the host city for the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010.

Vancouver is located at sea level and is surrounded by mountains including 3 ski hills within 15km of downtown. This will be the first Olympic Winter Games held at sea level hence the adopted name, “The Sea to Sky Games.” The highway that joins Vancouver to Whistler is often referred to as The Sea to Sky Highway. This highway is already under re-construction and is being expanded specifically for the XXI Olympic Winter Games in 2010.

The famous ski resort, Whistler, will share the Olympic Game events with Vancouver.

Another major difference with the Winter Games is that the opening and closing ceremonies are scheduled to take place indoors at BC Place Stadium, in the heart of downtown Vancouver, it has seating capacity of 60,000 people. This will mark the first time that the opening and closing ceremonies are held inside.

Dates:
Olympic Winter Games: February 12 – 28, 2010
Paralympics Winter Games: March 12 – 21, 2010

Sports held in Vancouver:
Freestyle, Snowboarding and all Ice sports: Hockey, Figure Skating, Curling, Speed Skating, and Short Track Speed Skating

Sports held in Whistler:
Alpine Skiing, Nordic Sports (Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Biathlon), Sliding Sports (Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton) and Paralympics Sports

Tickets:
1.8 million tickets will be available for the XXI Olympic Winter Games various sporting events. Another 900,000 tickets will be available for opening and closing ceremonies, festivals and medal presentations.

Social Service Agencies will have 50,000 tickets to distribute to the under-privileged, and to make the XXI Olympic Winter Games more accessible to everyone, 70,000 tickets will cost less than $50 CAD and 530,000 tickets will cost under $100 CAD.

Tickets will go on sale 12 – 18 months prior to the start of the games in February 2010.
